Etiella zinckenella (Treitschke) - (lima bean pod-borer)
This moth is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. The larvae bore into the pods of legumes like beans or peas and feed on the developing seeds. More than half of the pods may be damaged in one field and several pods can be damaged by one larva. The mature larvae leave the pod, drop to the ground and pupate inside the soil. Different host plants are apparently preferred by the insect in different regions. For example soybeans are mainly damaged in Asia, but beans and peas in other regions.
The adult moth has a wingspan of around 25 mm. The forewings are greyish brown with a cross-band and a white longitudinal stripe near the anterior margin. In eastern Asia, there are typically 3 generations per year.
